Getting Fit for Life (GFL)
The “Getting Fit for Life” (GFL), Youth Development Program is a year round program that offers children activities in physical fitness, recreation, learning and academic coaching, and participates in improving their community through community service projects. The program further develops skills in leadership and life from mentoring encounters with caring adults. Participants learn and practice conflict resolution skills and receive certification as a Peer Mediator with the expectation that a difference can and will be made in a community known for violence and conflict. Through this effort participants will be taught additional methods of respect and ways to develop positive relationships, cultural and human diversity-to include gender, race, religion, disability, class differences, and learn principles of inclusion and tolerance that will positively affect practices that are life-long.
GFL program activities include:
- Nutrition and Physical Fitness
- “Boys to Men” and “Girls to Greatness” Life Skills instruction
- Youth Leadership Development

- Conflict Resolution skills
- Peer mediation certification
- Goal Setting
- Intergenerational and non-profit community service project
- Cultural and Human Diversity
